Drawbacks and Concerns of the Wrong High-Protein Diet
Wednesday, July 14, 2010 - Protica Staff Writer

The high-protein diet of the past was a thing of wonder for many people. You could not only eat some of your favorite foods, you were greatly encouraged to do so: Burgers, steaks and eggs were only part of the foods that were suggested in this diet plan. In fact, the old-school high-protein diet suggested eating bacon and cheese with your burgers, but you could not have a bun or ketchup on this burger. You were also limited in the types of foods that you could eat with this bacon cheese burger as well. At first, the foods in this high protein diet seemed to be perfect and it was fairly easy to stick to for the first few weeks. However, after those first few weeks had passed, it became evident that the diet was lacking. Many people felt like there was something missing (there was) and many found themselves being grumpy and irritable with their friends and family. They also found themselves dealing with cravings for foods that they never thought they would miss: fruits, vegetables and bread.

The Problem With Eliminating Food Groups

As soon as you put any food on the forbidden list, your body may start craving it. With some of the older, high-protein foods, it was often strange for people to start dreaming about broccoli and other foods that were only allowed in small amounts or banned altogether. Just like other diets will not let you eat cheese or bacon or hamburger, the high protein diets that will not let you have simple pieces of fruit, drink juices or eat a slice of bread, is doomed to failure. When you put the forbidden status on a food, it becomes that much more attractive to you.

The problem with these high protein diets is simple: The foods that you can eat are high in more than protein. They are high in fats and calories as well. They also do not offer a wide range of the nutrients that we still need from the other food groups. There is a reason that you need all food groups. They are all necessary. You do need healthy fats, you do need carbohydrates and you do need fruits and vegetables in your diet.

When one food is suggested over all others, it should be a red flag warning about the diet.

Possible Long-Term Health Problems

The problem with the high protein diet is simple: There may be underlying long term health problems that are just becoming evident. The newer high protein diets are more focused on getting the right kind of protein rather than just randomly increasing protein without thinking about what type of protein it is.

If you eat a lot of high fat, protein sources, you are likely to get high cholesterol, a lot of saturated fat and of course, an increased amount of calories. Even if you are losing weight at first, you will eventually find that stalled and will probably gain this weight back and then some either because you have stopped following the high protein diet or your metabolism is stalled. The problems that can be caused by these kinds of high protein diets may just now be coming to light and can include cardiovascular disease like heart attack and stroke or high blood pressure. These in turn increase the risk for other diseases in the body as well.

A Better High-Protein Diet

In recent years, there have been some improvements to the high protein diet which includes diets that recognize the need for other important nutrients as well as the need to stick with healthier, leaner protein sources instead of the high fat choices from the past. There are many different, higher protein diets that can be considered by the average person. However, before starting with any diet plan, a doctor should be consulted for guidelines and warnings.

A better high protein diet is one that is well rounded and includes all of the food groups in the right amounts.

Smaller Meals, Supplements and Snacks

While it is important to find the right kind of foods for your healthy diet and better lifestyle, you also have to find the right way to eat those foods. For some people, portion control is a harder hurdle to get over and may cause some serious issues. After all, even if it is a healthy food, too much can lead to weight gain. Eating smaller meals including healthy and well balanced snacks can keep your metabolism revved up and working hard for the whole day as well as keeping you from being hungry. When you are allowed to get hungry, like you would in a diet that is based on three meals during the day, you may face a higher risk of ending up succumbing to cravings.

Supplements can be used as a meal replacement and can be a perfect way to go from one meal to the next. A healthy snack is one that keeps you from eating the wrong foods and can help you feel energized and full.

Isometric from Protica is the world’s smallest and most balanced, ready-to-drink meal replacement. Not only does this product, from Protica, offer two servings of fruits and vegetables but six grams of fiber as well as six grams of essential fatty acids plus 27 vitamins and minerals as well. Isometric is available in a number of different flavors and is slightly more than three ounces in size.

There are also snacks that can be used in the high protein diet, such as Protein Twist and Protein Taffy, both also available from Protica.

Why You Really Do Need Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are not the enemy that high protein diets make them out to be. The brain, the most complex organ in the body, will only accept energy that is generated from carbs. However, they have to be the right ones. Complex carbohydrates, like those in whole grain breads, pastas and other foods are slower to digest and therefore do not cause the problems with the sugar spike like simple carbs can. The problem with the old-fashioned high protein diet that eliminated carbohydrates from all sources was the fact that after a week or two of not having any carbs, most people were exhausted and feeling pretty irritable. Because the body uses more energy to digest protein than any other foods, it needs those foods to help break down the increased protein intake in the high-protein diet.
