How do you decide what is the best day to start a new diet? Is there any special luck attached to any one particular day of the week? Will a diet that is started on Monday be any less successful than a diet that is started on Sunday or a Friday? Why would it matter what day becomes diet day? What is the actual benefit and what can you do in the pre-diet days and on diet day eve to ensure the success of the diet itself?
Why Setting a Diet Day is Important
Setting an actual diet day and sticking to it can be a good way to get yourself psyched up and ready to start a healthier eating style and a new fitness routine. In order to have your physical ducks all in a row, you have to start with the mental side of things. Set a date, announce it to your friends and family, circle it in red on the calendar and set your cell phone to give you a reminder. It is a simple matter of figuring out what you need to have in your mind, the act of getting your mind set right before making changes.
It is also important to make several choices a few days beforehand. Will you be using a certain diet plan? Will you be using a weight loss counselor? Do you need to buy any special equipment or special food for this diet plan? Will you also be joining a gym or buying additional workout gear? These steps might also be beneficial to you because they set a tone for you- a monetary investment that makes the commitment that much more concrete. After all, you don’t want to think that you have wasted this money without giving it your best effort.
Another issue that you may need to keep in mind before you choose your actual diet day involves another appointment - with your doctor. Before you start a new diet and exercise plan, you should consult your doctor for advice and guidance especially if you are on any type of long-term medication. If you have selected a diet plan that you are interested in, bring the information to the doctor so that he can look it over. He may have some additional questions or information for you and may also suggest that you see a nutritionist as well for further assistance in finding the right eating plan.
Setting Achievable Goals Before and After Diet Day
Most weight loss experts suggest that instead of simply starting a whole new diet plan, you break the task into small habits that you need to change. For instance, if you are eating too many fast food meals, you can reduce the number gradually before you actually hit diet day.
If you eat out for every lunch, then you would start two weeks before the actual diet started with bringing lunch two of three days and trying to eat smaller or lighter fare on the other days. On the second week, the week that is just before the diet day, you would aim for three days of healthy lunches and only two day of fast food fare. Of course, once you get in the habit of eating smaller meals, you may be able to eliminate lunches out altogether, saving yourself some serious money in a year’s time as well as benefiting from the calorie savings.
Don’t announce that on Monday, you are going to be starting a diet that you hope will help you lose 50 pounds. That should not be your first goal. You want to start with smaller goals such as eating healthier or including more fruits and vegetables in your diet. You may want to reduce your blood pressure or lessen your risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. You may also want to give yourself small goals to work for that can be as simple as ten pounds at a time. As soon as you hit this goal, you can change your goals all over again. Now you might want to increase your exercise, take up a new sport and lose another ten pounds. You continually change the goals that you are working on, keeping the new good habits you have formed and losing more bad habits as well.
In the Days before Diet Day
In the days leading to the big kick off, get all your first week’s menus out and plan your shopping so that you have everything on hand as you need it. If you know that time is going to be tight on Wednesday, for instance, pre make as much of the meal’s for that day as you can. Consider making the meals, freezing them in individual containers, with labels and then just popping the right one out of the freezer. Whatever makes things easier for you. Get your workout gear ready, and plan workouts that include alternatives for every excuse in the book: too cold, hot, rainy, windy or whatever outside? You can pop in a DVD or use your smart phone for downloadable workouts right in the palm of your hand. Don’t feel well or lack the energy? Try gentle yoga or take a walk.
The more prepared you are, the better you will do in the long run.
The Night Before
Some people assume this is their last night of food freedom, but really this is the last night of junk food jail. They are going to be working on a healthy lifestyle and a strong and healthy body, not filling it with processed foods that have artificial ingredients and barely pronounceable additives. Take this time to prepare your mind to really focus on what you want to accomplish. Pamper yourself with a long soak in the tub and then get a good night’s sleep so that you are ready for the morning.
Be Prepared for a Slip Up or a Sudden Craving
You will make a bad food choice. You will slip up. You will end up eating the donut when you should have had an apple. Having a way of dealing with a slip up or a sudden craving can be a very important part of your plan and should include calling a friend, chewing a stick of sugarless gum or having a planned snack, particularly one that is high in protein, which can help you stay full for longer and keep you on track. Protica, the company that brought you Profect, also has a meal replacement called Isometric, which is not only small but well balanced, 100% all natural and contains two full servings of fruits and vegetables in just over three ounces. It can be perfect to keep you from ruining your whole day.
